Oh, A Girl Dragon is a blog geared toward women and covering topics that are generally of male interest but that many women who also find them interesting. Specifically, geeky items such as science, sci-fi, fantasy, and gaming. Basically a blog for all the tomboys out there. I found that other blogs in this niche frequently lean towards the sexualization of the female geek. Not that female geeks can’t be sexy or that I’m a prude, but so many sites seem to perpetuate the myth that the female geek is sitting at her computer while wearing lingerie, fishnet stockings with a garter, and high heels. Highly unlikely.
The name comes from that moment when a fellow online gamer realizes they are talking to/gaming with a woman. Men aren’t the only ones that have this Aha! moment. A gamer might make assumptions about the person they are playing with based on things they say or the way they say them. Why did I pick the word “girl”? It seemed to fit and I’m a huge fan of the Shrek movies, and there’s a point in the first movie where Donkey realizes that Dragon is attracted to him because Dragon is a female and says “A girl dragon… Oh, sure, I mean of COURSE you’re a girl dragon!” So the name is a bit of a tip of the hat to that movie.
I am Sabrina, your blogger. I’m in my mid 30s, married, and I have one cat. I’m originally from the Chicago area, but I currently live in Omaha. I don’t remember a time when I didn’t love Star Wars, and have always been interested in the Science Fiction and Fantasy genres. I started college as a Geology major, and I love computers, gadgets, and technology. I am also going back to school to finish my bachelor’s degree and hoping to finish in summer, 2013. Since I am going to school and I also work full time, my plan is to post one to two times a week. Hopefully more, definitely not less.
